MET 320 Excused Absence Grading Policy

When a student receives an email reply from me approving an excused absence, a grade of “e” is recorded in the grade book for that student for that day.  The excused-day “e” grades will later become numerical grade estimated to reflect the student’s relative performance on recent completed short quizzes.

If a student opts to decline taking the short quiz on the day of their return to class by writing on their SQ “I will submit notes for the missed classes on the next class day”, a bold blue “2” will be entered in the grade book for that day. This grade will later become an estimated numerical grade when on the next class day the student submits a copy of the class notes for the excused day(s).  The notes must include worked missed SQ(s) for the excused day(s) if full credit is to be awarded.  Full credit is deemed to be a grade consistent with the student’s performance on normally-completed short quizzes near the time of the excused absence.

Example:

George has been excused from Sept 11 and returns to class Sept 12 at which time he opts to submit the notes on Sept 13 rather than taking the quiz on Sept 12.

If George submitted an inadequate copy of the notes for the day he missed class (Sept 11) and/or failed to show the worked SQ for that day, his grade for Sept 12 could be downgraded to something more like a 4.

If George submitted nothing in the way of notes on Sept 13th or the wrong day’s notes, his grade for Sept 12 would remain 2.  Submitted notes have no effect on the excused day’s (Sept 11) estimated grade.
